Hey fellow adventurers!
There's truly nothing quite like the feeling of gliding across a serene lake, the sun warming your skin, and nothing but the gentle lapping of water accompanying you. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has become one of my favourite ways to explore new destinations and connect with nature, whether it's the clear waters of Chilliwack Lake here in my home, the province of British Columbia.
But as any seasoned traveler knows, being prepared is key to turning a good day into an unforgettable one. So, before you grab your board and hit the water, here’s my tried-and-true packing list for a fantastic SUP adventure, ensuring you're safe, comfortable, and ready for anything.

The Absolute Essentials (Don't Leave Home Without These!)
Your Paddleboard & Paddle: Obvious, right? But make sure it's properly inflated (if it's an inflatable SUP) and that your paddle is correctly assembled and adjusted to your height. If you're renting, like from us at Sasquatch Outdoor Rentals in Chilliwack, we'll usually take care of this for you!
Personal Flotation Device (PFD): This is non-negotiable for safety. Even if you're a strong swimmer, unexpected currents or a sudden fall can happen. Always wear your PFD!
Leash: Attach your leash to your ankle. This keeps your board close to you if you fall off, preventing it from drifting away – especially crucial in windy conditions.
Water Bottle: Hydration is paramount! You'll be surprised how much energy paddling expends, even on a calm day. Opt for a reusable bottle to be eco-friendly.
Sun Protection:

SUP's essentials for beginners Sunscreen: Apply generously and reapply often, especially on exposed skin. The sun's reflection off the water can intensify its rays.
Hat: A wide-brbrimmed hat or a baseball cap offers great face protection.
Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses are fantastic for reducing glare from the water, allowing you to see deeper and protect your eyes. Don't forget a retainer strap!
Appropriate Clothing:
Swimsuit: Of course!
Quick-Drying Layers: Think rash guards, synthetic t-shirts, or light shorts. These wick away moisture and dry quickly if you take a dip. Avoid cotton, as it stays wet and can make you cold.
Water Shoes/Sandals (optional but recommended): Protect your feet from rocks, sharp shells, or slippery surfaces when launching or landing.
Comfort & Convenience (Make Your Trip Even Better!)
Dry Bag: This is your best friend! A waterproof dry bag will keep your phone, keys, wallet, snacks, and any other essentials safe and dry.
Snacks: Pack some energy-boosting snacks like granola bars, fruit, or trail mix. You'll be grateful for them after some vigorous paddling.
First-Aid Kit (Small): For minor scrapes or blisters. A few band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers can go a long way.
Whistle: Many PFDs come with one, but if not, attach a small whistle to your PFD. It's an excellent way to signal for help if needed.
Waterproof Phone Case: To capture those incredible photos and stay connected (if you choose to!).
Small Towel: A quick-drying microfiber towel is perfect for drying off after a swim.
Pro Tips from the Road:
Check the Weather: Always check the forecast before heading out. Wind and sudden storms can turn a relaxing paddle into a challenging one.
Tell Someone Your Plans: Let a friend or family member know where you're going and when you expect to return.
Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you pack in. Let's keep our beautiful waters and shorelines pristine for everyone to enjoy.
Consider a Portable Speaker: If you enjoy music, a small, waterproof Bluetooth speaker can add to the vibe, but remember to be mindful of others sharing the water!
Whether you're a seasoned paddler or trying it for the first time, having the right gear ensures you can focus on the incredible experience of being on the water. So, pack smart, paddle often, and embrace every moment of your SUP adventure!
Happy paddling!
